In 1855, Napoleon III brought back the lavishness of the Ancien Régime when he held a banquet for Queen Victoria here, and likewise in 1864 on the occasion of a gala performance for the King Consort of Spain. Inaugurated in 1770 during the reign of Louis XV, it was at the time the largest concert hall in Europe, and was also a great technical achievement and an impressive feat of decorative refinement. A theatre for monarchic and then republican life, it has hosted celebrations, shows and parliamentary debates. You are welcome to take pictures throughout the rest of the building and before performances and share them with us through social media.
Antonio Pappano, Music Director of The Royal Opera
Further information on the festival will be announced by the Foundation in due course. The Royal Opera House (ROH) is a historic opera house and major performing arts venue in Covent Garden, central London. The large building is often referred to as simply Covent Garden, after a previous use of the site.

In addition to the Pulitzer, he has received numerous awards, including those from the Kennedy Center Fund, American Theatre Critics and the Humana Festival for New American Plays; as well as grants from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation, among others. The Mexican baritone is a great favorite at the renowned Berlin State Opera, appearing there in leading roles of Rossini, Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Gounod, Massenet and Puccini. Acclaimed Verdi portrayals in other venues include Stankar in Stiffelio and Francesco Moor in I masnadieri (both at Berlin’s Konzerthaus), Ford in Falstaff (Hamburg, Bologna), and Germont in La traviata (Hamburg, Tokyo). Also in Europe, he has sung roles as diverse as Dandini in La Cenerentola (Rome), Sir Robert Cecil in Britten’s Gloriana (Hamburg), and Scarpia in Tosca and Hermann in Catalani’s Loreley (both in St. Gallen, Switzerland). The historic struggle between Christian and Muslim naval forces for control of the eastern Mediterranean is now between the Republic of Venice and the Ottoman Turks, its principal objective the island of Cyprus, currently occupied by Venice. Unusually, Otello is a Moor, a Muslim who has converted to Christianity, married a noble Venetian and risen to the highest rank in the Venetian armed forces. In the summer of 2023, he appears with Aspen Music Festival as the Voice of the Oracle (Neptune) in Idomeneo, also covering the role of General Benjamin in Jimmy Lopez's Bel Canto.

Lucia di Lammermoor
He has a fine, lyric tenor voice and it is surely a question of time before he is engaged on the stage in more demanding roles. The production here, by Katie Mitchell and Vicki Mortimer, splits the stage into two; providing a living split-screen presentation; the main story unfolding in one half whilst the other provides some context or ancillary backdrop. The Jette Parker Young Artists Programme, founded in 2001, offers exceptionally talented musicians at the start of their careers a tailored programme of coaching and performance opportunities. Following on from the great legacy of ROH Bridge, we also launch ROH East, a dedicated new programme which works in Levelling Up for Culture schools across the East of England, building confidence of teachers and inspiring creativity of young people across Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and North Kent.
I have no doubt that the Royal Opera House, along with other houses, will be eager to engage him further. The company presents around different operas a year with no single focus, albeit a slight preference towards 19th Century works. Audience tastes lie somewhere between the USA and Europe, strongly traditional productions mixing with starkly contemporary ones. The average audience age is high but that is somewhat dictated by the inevitably high price of the tickets. In June 2024, The Royal Opera is delighted to be returning to Japan on tour for the first time since 2019 with performances at Bunka Kaikan Theatre and NHK Hall in Tokyo, and Kanagawa Kenmin Hall in Yokohama. Antonio Pappano will be conducting spectacular casts in Oliver Mears’s darkly elegant production of Verdi’s Rigoletto and Andrei Șerban’s classic staging of Puccini’s Turandot.

Aigul Akhmetshina and Vasilisa Berzhanskaya share the role of Carmen in Damiano Michieletto's poetic, contemporary new staging of Bizet's beloved Carmen. Antonello Manacorda and Emmanuel Villaume conduct two accomplished casts in this sultry new production which evokes the passion and heat of Bizet's score. In other revivals, Carlos Acosta’s vibrant production of Don Quixote opens the Season for The Royal Ballet. This celebrated production, which premiered in 2013, is the perfect showcase for a Company dancing at its peak.
It is the home of The Royal Opera, The Royal Ballet, and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. The first theatre on the site, the Theatre Royal (1732), served primarily as a playhouse for the first hundred years of its history. Many of his operas and oratorios were specifically written for Covent Garden and had their premieres there.
Among his final projects, he had designed a new Ring cycle for Lyric Opera of Chicago; the first three Ring operas premiered there posthumously between 2016 and 2018. Conlon holds four honorary doctorates, was one of the first five recipients of the Opera News Awards, and was distinguished by the New York Public Library as a Library Lion. He received a 2023 Cross of Honor for Science and Art (Österreichische Ehrenkreuz für Wissenschaft und Kunst) from the Republic of Austria, and was named Commendatore Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana by Sergio Mattarella, President of the Italian Republic.
And in Katie Mitchell’s and Robin Tebbutt’s revival production of Donizetti’s tragic opera, the singing is inarguably superlative. The Royal Opera House takes safety and security extremely seriously and we work to protect our staff and visitors at all times. You will see our highly trained security officers at all entrances and exits conducting bag searches and patrolling our spaces. Behind the scenes we operate a 24/7 security control room and regularly conduct emergency exercises to ensure we can respond quickly and effectively to any serious incidents. Our front of house staff and security officers are trained to deal with emergencies, detect suspicious behaviour and provide first aid. Please always speak to a member of staff if you are concerned or are seeking assistance in any way.
